Bridging Theory and Practice with Research – Insights from an IMM Graduate School 2024 Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Marketing Graduate

The journey towards a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Marketing qualification is one of dedication, perseverance, and rigorous academic inquiry.
At the IMM Graduate School, postgraduate students engage in impactful research that contributes to both academic knowledge and industry practice.
During the Gauteng Class of 2024 Graduation ceremony on 14 March 2025, The Dispatch spoke to Sharmila Raghunanan, who graduated cum laude with an MPhil in Marketing and was recognised as the Top Master’s Graduate for 2024.
She shared insights into her research journey and the invaluable lessons gained through her studies.
The Focus of The Research
Sharmila’s dissertation focused on customer loyalty in the hotel industry, specifically evaluating the effect of service quality and brand equity.
As someone who is already a marketing professional in the hospitality sector, she had direct access to industry data, enabling her to conduct a robust quantitative study. She explained that she chose a quantitative approach because of her affinity for statistics and wanted to understand how consumers perceive hotel brands and what drives their loyalty.
Her findings underscored the evolving nature of customer expectations in the hospitality sector and offered practical, data-driven strategies for hotel marketers to improve customer loyalty.
Key Research Findings
Sharmila’s research highlighted the interconnectedness of service quality, brand equity and customer loyalty in the hotel industry.
She observed that consistent service delivery is critical for building strong brand equity. Furthermore, she noted that customer loyalty extends beyond good service and is increasingly shaped by the ability of hotels to create memorable experiences that inspire guests to return.
Sharmila hopes her research work will offer hospitality professionals a clear framework for enhancing guest satisfaction and developing long-term brand relationships.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Growth
Transitioning from honours to master’s-level study brought significant challenges, according to Sharmila.
She reflected on the moments of uncertainty and emotional difficulty she faced throughout the process.
However, she credited her perseverance and the steady support of her supervisor for keeping her motivated. She found that applying academic research to real-world business problems was ultimately one of the most fulfilling aspects of the journey.
Support from the IMM Graduate School
Sharmila spoke highly of the support she received from the IMM Graduate School. She described the faculty and research team as dedicated and instrumental in helping her navigate her studies.
In particular, she acknowledged the role of Dr Helena van Wyk (Dean: Postgraduate Studies and Research) and her team, whose guidance she believed had a meaningful impact on her success.
Having studied exclusively at the IMM Graduate School since 1999, Sharmila expressed strong personal and professional loyalty to the institution and the foundational role it had in her development.
