eLearning Africa 2025
Dr Helena van Wyk, Dean: Postgraduate Studies and Research, and Riana Prins, Head: Assessments and LMS, represented the IMM Graduate School at the 2025 eLearning Africa Conference, held from 6 to 8 May in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Now in its 18th edition, eLearning Africa is the continent’s largest and most influential conference on technology-assisted learning, attracting leaders, policymakers, academics, industry experts, and innovators from across Africa and beyond.
A Conference at the Heart of Africa’s Digital Transformation
This year’s theme, Re-imagining Human Capital Development in Africa: Developing Skills for the Digital Workplace, Building AI Readiness for Africa and the Centrality of Data, set the stage for a compelling programme focused on preparing Africa’s workforce for a technology-driven future.

The conference explored three overarching areas: digital skills for the workplace, artificial intelligence (AI) readiness, and the role of data in education. Across plenary sessions, workshops, and networking events, participants considered how Africa can leverage the opportunities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution to enhance both education and economic growth.
Building Competitiveness through Digital Literacy
One of the strongest messages to emerge was the urgent need for Africa to invest in digital literacy as a foundation for long-term competitiveness. In an increasingly interconnected world, the ability to navigate digital platforms, use AI tools effectively, and interpret data is no longer optional. These skills are essential for active participation in the global economy, driving innovation, improving governance, and delivering efficient public services.

Sustainability and Green Skills in the Curriculum
Sessions also addressed the growing importance of green skills and climate change education, recognising that Africa’s future workforce must be prepared to address environmental challenges alongside technological ones. Integrating sustainability into education, alongside digital competencies, will help ensure resilience in the face of global change.
Preparing for Responsible and Ethical AI Adoption
AI readiness was another focal point, with discussions on how to prepare African institutions, educators, and learners to harness the power of AI responsibly and ethically. Speakers emphasised that AI has the potential to transform teaching and learning, from personalised education pathways to real-time feedback and predictive analytics, but only if supported by robust infrastructure, training, and governance frameworks.
Public-Private Partnerships Driving Access and Innovation
The role of public-private partnerships was highlighted as a key driver in scaling up access to quality education. Collaborative initiatives between governments, educational institutions, and technology providers were showcased, demonstrating how partnerships can expand connectivity, reduce costs, and bring innovative solutions to underserved communities.
Learning from Africa’s Success Stories
For Dr van Wyk and Ms Prins, the conference provided a rich platform for exchanging ideas and learning from practical case studies across the continent. They noted the value of connecting with peers from different contexts, many of whom shared inspiring examples of innovation in resource-constrained environments.
These experiences reinforced the IMM Graduate School’s commitment to advancing digital skills, AI readiness, and data fluency within higher education.
As part of its ongoing strategy, the IMM Graduate School aims to integrate these skills into its academic programmes, ensuring graduates are well-equipped for the demands of a digital workplace. This aligns with Africa’s broader ambition to build a skilled, adaptable, and future-ready workforce capable of seizing emerging opportunities in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
eLearning Africa 2026 in Accra
Looking ahead, the next edition of eLearning Africa will take place from 3 to 5 June 2026 in Accra, Ghana, co-hosted by the Ghanaian Ministry of Education.
The IMM Graduate School looks forward to contributing to the conversation once again, sharing its expertise and collaborating with partners to shape Africa’s inclusive and sustainable digital transformation.
