Thought Leadership Article: The Academic Research Landscape Is Changing, But No Agility in Sight

Dr Tatenda Chabata (PhD) is an academic who is a digital marketing specialist, entrepreneur, and thought leader with expertise in sustainable development and stakeholder behaviour. He is the Head Lecturer for Advanced Digital Marketing at IMM Graduate School and a Platinum Professional Associate. With over 10 years of experience in academic coaching and lecturing, he has a strong track record of student success. As Executive Director of WATMA Group, he blends business and academia. His research on mobile shopping applications advances digital marketing and user experience.
The world of academic research is constantly evolving, requiring academic leadership to implement agile and transformational strategies that enhance educational research excellence.
Notable changes have been driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). While some view AI and ML as disruptive, it is undeniable that they are here to stay, necessitating the integration of such tools into our research arsenal.
As a Head Lecturer for Advanced Digital Marketing and a Research and Development professional for over 10 years, I have observed that the vast array of generative AI tools is bypassing traditional checks and balances. The question, therefore, is: since the academic research landscape is changing, how can institutions become agile?
Ethical Research Conduct and Source Credibility
In my opinion, securing stakeholder buy-in should be a priority. Starting with students, fostering ethical research conduct can encourage honesty and transparency in producing sound, best-practice research. Additionally, institutions should reassess the sources used in research by prioritising Q1, Q2, and Q3 journal articles as core references.
Currently, many sources are deemed acceptable, ranging from blogs and news articles to vlogs and podcasts. By implementing stricter standards, institutions can cultivate a high-impact learning culture that develops essential skills in sourcing credible research materials and identifying relevant themes.
The Role of Research Hubs in Advancing Scholarship
Since few institutions, particularly private ones, have dedicated research hubs, their inclusion is essential for research empowerment. Research hubs serve as vital engines of academic advancement in an era defined by innovation and knowledge. Beyond promoting scholarly research, they bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical implementation.
These hubs foster multidisciplinary collaboration, leading to groundbreaking discoveries and enhancing both institutional and student research output. Establishing research hubs can help create a flexible and transformational research culture that addresses both current and future challenges.
Funding and Early Publication Culture
Financial support is another crucial factor, and Chief Financial Officers should play a key role in funding research. Investing in a publication culture at the Honours level, rather than delaying it to higher academic levels, can drive long-term research success.
For example, in China, students are encouraged to publish their research projects for year-end matric exams, significantly enhancing the country’s research capacity. The widespread citation of these projects by international scholars underscores the importance of agile academic research that fosters a culture of accelerated learning.
Strengthening Research Skills and Data Analysis Proficiency
All stakeholders involved in research capacity-building must highlight the importance and benefits of research at all academic levels. Equally important is equipping researchers with best-practice skills, such as data analysis, academic writing, and enhanced presentation techniques. One area that remains underdeveloped is data analysis proficiency.
Few South African academics are skilled in qualitative and quantitative data analysis. Despite access to tools like Atlas.TI for qualitative research and SmartPLS for quantitative analysis, these resources remain underutilised due to limited exposure and training. Based on my years of experience in research and development, I believe more must be done to ensure researchers are well-rounded.
This need led to the establishment of WATMA Group, a consulting firm focused on supporting researchers at various stages of their research journey, from foundational to advanced skills. The company works with large datasets, providing informed insights and recommendations across both theoretical and practical domains.
Founded in 2018, WATMA Group is a South African company offering a wide range of services, including consulting, website development, digital marketing, script marking and moderation, as well as research support. Their services span digital marketing, business development, social media management, research support, proofreading, and statistical data analysis.
