Life at IMM
Academic Support
The objective of your education is to take you to new places. Its purpose is to enrich your life and increase your opportunities. Your education should teach you to combine your knowledge and ideas in interesting ways, so that you can critically interrogate the world and continually discover new things. This is especially relevant in the business world. At the IMM Graduate School we believe that the purpose of studying is not merely to convey information to the student, but to produce a forum conducive to critical analysis.
This is a challenging task that can only be achieved if all role players are engaged. To achieve these goals, you must be exposed to different kinds of teaching styles and learning media, with each possessing its own advantages, encouraging you to engage in numerous discussions, for the content to challenge your assumptions, and for you to learn to reframe your perspective. Throughout the learning process you will be asked to question your understanding and to challenge stale ideas and knowledge. It is in this manner, in humility, that our knowledge empowers us to take action and make a difference.
Online Resources
eLearn
Our Learning Management System (eLearn) essentially serves as a virtual campus that provides students with access to learning materials, submission portals, assessments, discussion boards, and other educational tools. Much like a physical university campus has classrooms, libraries, faculty offices, and administrative support resources, eLearn combines these functions via an online portal accessible 24/7 via any web-enabled device. eLearn allows faculty to distribute readings and multimedia course content, upload assignment guidelines, receive submissions, design quizzes, track student progress, moderate discussion forums, communicate announcements, and analyse performance data. It enables students to engage course materials, submit work, complete tests, assignments and final assessments, collaborate with peers, message lecturers, manage coursework, and monitor their academic progress. By providing an integrated digital environment supporting teaching and learning, eLearn becomes a versatile virtual campus delivering academic content and interactions beyond the constraints of the physical classroom.
ProQuest One Business database and ProQuest Ebook Central (eLibrary)
This is the virtual library where you can peruse additional reading material and conduct research for your assignments, projects and research reports. ProQuest One Business provides access to peer reviewed academic journals, articles and other academic sources covering Marketing, Management and Logistics. ProQuest Ebook Central provides credible content with a breadth and depth of ebooks from scholarly sources, including University Presses and other top publishers. Subjects covered are Marketing, Business, Management, Economics, Education, Computer Science and much more.
Student Portal
This is a platform where you can source assignment results, exam results, and exam confirmation letters. You can also update your personal details, monitor and follow your account information.
Online Chats
These are online question and answer chat sessions facilitated on our eDiscussion Forum, giving you the opportunity to ask subject-related questions and receive immediate feedback and advice from an expert. These chat sessions are also uploaded onto eLearn for you, where you can access them at any time should you have missed the live session.
Other Supporting Resources
Knowledge Centres
The IMM Graduate School has Knowledge Centres at Campuses and Student Support Centres (SSC’s) with textbooks, online resources and additional materials to help you when doing your assignments when you need to reference additional sources. These centres also provide free internet/wifi access to students.
Study Materials
Study Guides
eStudy Guides have become essential academic supplements to facilitate productive independent learning. These interactive eStudy Guides provide critical supplement to the lectures and tutorials.
The key purpose of the eStudy Guide is to simplify and reinforce key theories and concepts handled in lectures through visual, bite-sized content. Students can access explanatory notes, infographics, video explanations and practice questions to aid understanding of complex learning content. These supplemental resources are invaluable for consolidating knowledge and pinpointing gaps in your knowledge.
Additionally, eStudy Guides have practical revision tips, assessment advice and recommended wider readings to help retain information. They enable personalised and self-directed learning for you to prepare thoroughly for tests and assignments. You can use them to target priority areas, fill knowledge gaps at your own pace and boost academic performance.
eStudy Guides empower independent learning and help you to develop a firm grasp of module learning content, ultimately helping fulfil your academic potential across degree programmes.
Textbooks
Each semester students are supplied with a list of prescribed textbooks available on the website. Textbooks are prescribed to supplement lectures and provide you with foundational subject knowledge. Prescribed books have practice questions, activities and assignments which help you self-evaluate understanding of chapters and identify areas needing attention for thorough learning.
Module Teaching and Study Plan
The Module Teaching and Study Plan sets out a weekly time frame for completion of the module content. This allows you to follow a structured study strategy, providing a framework to master the overall module content and assisting with the timeous completion of formative assessment submissions, while keeping the examination season in mind. The Module Teaching and Study Plan also provides the student with a condensed overview of the entire module.
