The overall topic was “How do you prepare future-ready business students?” The presentations were excellent, ranging from practical solutions for using AI in the classroom, using simulations to teach critical and strategic thinking, to actual toolkits with practical techniques that you can implement immediately in the classroom.
The speakers were global: Indiana, Uganda, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Colombia, Pakistan and South Africa. All the speakers were very passionate about education and presented some very interesting techniques on how they use the simulations in their curriculum.

Why do traditional business assessments fail to build deep strategic thinking in postgraduate students?
My topic focused on how to build strategic thinking through assessments:
At the postgraduate level, our core mandate is to build deep strategic thinkers, graduates who can walk into a boardroom, look at a chaotic competitive landscape and make high-stakes, analytical decisions.
Yet, the way we conventionally teach and assess this competency is broken.
We rely on static case studies, where students look backwards with perfect hindsight, or long-form descriptive essays that test memorisation rather than execution. Worse yet, in the current technological climate, these conventional descriptive assignments are highly vulnerable to AI outsourcing.
If a student can ask an AI to write their marketing plan, we are no longer assessing their strategic thinking; we are assessing their prompt engineering. Our challenge is clear: how do we design an assessment architecture that forces students to execute, adapt and mathematically defend strategic logic in real time?
How does business simulation cadence bridge the gap between executive execution and strategic decision-making?
To break out of the static assignment trap, we implemented the Marketplace Simulation as our central pedagogical vehicle. It is important to note that this was not chosen simply as a gamified technology add-on; it was an intentional, structural design decision. The simulation was not chosen because it is engaging or novel, though it is both. The simulation puts students into competitive teams running a business from scratch across an 8-quarter (2-year) business life cycle. Every week, they submit their quarterly decisions.
We chose an eight-quarter cadence deliberately. Strategy is not a single, once-off plan; it is an ongoing cycle of commitment, observation and real-time adjustment. This structure forces students to navigate the exact tension senior executives face every week: how to survive immediate quarterly cash-flow pressures without compromising long-term strategic investments. Every submission changes the market context, meaning students must live with the competitive reality they created the week before.
The magic of this approach lies in the continuous, closed feedback loop. Students don’t submit an assignment and wait three weeks for an assessor’s red pen. Instead, they make decisions on product and brand design, pricing, factory capacity, segment targeting, marketing, sales, customer needs, and budgets, and the simulation immediately pushes back real-time financial statements, market share drops and competitor counters.

A multi-modal assessment architecture is a scaffolded four-tiered assessment matrix that forces deep critical reflection and strategic thinking.
First, we track their group simulation performance using a comprehensive balanced scorecard, measuring elements such as return on equity, asset management and market share stability.
Second, they submit written strategic reports. This is where we combat the descriptive writing trap. They cannot simply tell us what happened; they must use accounting and marketing metrics to justify why it happened. The written reports force students to externalise their thinking, proving that their decisions are grounded in financial analysis rather than random intuition.
Third, they complete a live executive pitch, defending their corporate choices under cross-examination by the lecturer acting as a sceptical board. The live boardroom presentations add professional accountability, instantly separating teams who truly understand their business from those who simply wrote a nice document.
Finally, we balance group dynamics with 360-degree peer reviews and a rigorous, isolated individual final online assessment.
