Dropping the SCM Beat: IMM Graduate School Students Turn Supply Chain Theory Into a Rap Battle

What happens when first-year supply chain students are asked to explain logistics, procurement, inventory control, and distribution through hip hop?
At the IMM Graduate School’s Stellenbosch Campus, it became the SCM Cohort Rap Off 2026: a creative assessment that challenged SCM101B students to write, produce, and perform original rap music videos based on real supply chain management concepts.
The result was a high-energy showcase of experiential learning that transformed classroom theory into something memorable, collaborative, and entertaining.
A Different Approach to Supply Chain Education
Instead of a traditional assignment, students in Supply Chain Management 1 (SCM101B) were divided into four groups and tasked with creating a full rap production around the theme: “Drop the Beat on Supply Chain.”
Each team had to:
- Create their own production house
- Write original lyrics rooted in supply chain theory
- Produce and film a music video
- Perform without lip-syncing
- Work collaboratively under structured team roles
The completed videos were then opened to voting across the IMM Graduate School Stellenbosch Campus.
Meet the SCM Cohort Rap Off Teams
Group A: Chain Reaction presents The Fifth Element
Filmed in a warehouse environment, The Fifth Element explored the idea that logistics is the “fifth element” connecting every part of global commerce.
The group covered concepts including:
- Freight and logistics operations
- GPS tracking and supply chain visibility
- Procurement and supplier management
- Inventory accuracy and warehouse operations
- Lead times and demand planning
The video stood out for its strong visual identity, confident performance style, and clever integration of real-world supply chain terminology into the lyrics.
Group B: Raw2Retail presents Retail From Raw
Group B focused on the complete journey of goods from raw material sourcing to retail delivery.
Using transport and logistics visuals throughout the video, the group highlighted:
- End-to-end supply chain flow
- First-mile and last-mile logistics
- Just-in-time delivery
- Inventory management
- Supply chain transparency and optimisation
Their recurring hook, “from the first mile start to the last mile end”, captured the continuous movement at the heart of supply chain management.
Group C: Lead Time Studios presents Just In Time
Taking a more narrative approach, Group C followed the journey of a single apple from farm to customer.
The concept allowed the group to demonstrate:
- Order fulfilment processes
- Cold chain logistics
- Agricultural supply chains
- Last-mile delivery
- Just-in-time inventory principles
By grounding the entire performance around one relatable product journey, the group turned complex theory into a clear and engaging story.
Group D: Flow State Logistics presents The Pallet Pushas
Filmed inside a real container yard, The Pallet Pushas leaned fully into the visual world of logistics and freight movement.
The group tackled a wide range of concepts, including:
- Procurement and cost negotiation
- Demand forecasting
- Inventory control
- Risk management
- Supplier relationships
- Global supply chain operations
- Centralised and decentralised structures
Their energetic delivery and industry-inspired setting created a strong sense of authenticity.
And the Winner Is…
After campus-wide voting by students, faculty, academic associates, and support staff, the winner of the SCM Cohort Rap Off 2026 was officially announced as:
Group A: Chain Reaction performing The Fifth Element
The winning team impressed audiences with its warehouse-style production, confident delivery, and creative interpretation of logistics as the “fifth element” of commerce.
Congratulations to all four groups for delivering a project that demonstrated creativity, teamwork, and a strong understanding of supply chain management principles.
