The IMM Graduate School Showcases Research at the 10th SSIRC Conference

The IMM Graduate School participated in the 10th Social Sciences International Research Conference (SSIRC 2025), hosted by North-West University and held from 6–7 November 2025 at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Durban.
The two-day event brought together leading academics, researchers, and industry professionals to explore innovative insights under the theme A Decade of Impact and a Future of Possibilities.
IMM Graduate School Faculty Presentation
Representing the IMM Graduate School, programme coordinator and head lecturer Mujinga Tshimanga and Research Associate Brad Bell presented their paper titled Strategic Risk Prioritisation: Key Threats to South African Retailers (2025–2029) during the Business Resilience Track.
Their research provided a compelling analysis of how major South African retailers are managing economic turbulence, digital vulnerabilities, and supply chain disruptions.
Drawing on the Dynamic Capabilities Framework, the study emphasised the importance of sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring organisational strategies to build resilience in an uncertain business environment.
The presentation was well-received, sparking lively discussions on the role of AI-driven risk analytics, cybersecurity collaboration, and infrastructure investment as key levers for strengthening retail competitiveness across the region.
One of the paper’s practical policy recommendations included the need for coordinated government and industry responses to systemic risks that threaten economic stability. This research further reinforced the IMM Graduate School’s reputation for thought leadership and applied research that bridges academia and business practice.
Exploring the Human Impact of AI
The keynote address, delivered by Professor Leon de Beer from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, explored The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Work-Life and the Human Condition.
His presentation set the tone for a series of thought-provoking debates throughout the conference, encouraging attendees to reflect on the evolving relationship between humans and technology in modern workplaces.
