The IMM Graduate School’s Centre for Research is deeply involved in the academic, educational, and professional marketing and supply chain communities, furthering knowledge-sharing, networking, and collaboration across various impactful events.
Members of the team attended and participated in recent conferences that highlighted key academic and industry trends.
African Marketing Academic Collaboration (AMAC) Seminar / 21-22 August 2024
This event was hosted by Tshwane University of Technology, and Dr Helena van Wyk and Ms Claudine Botha represented the IMM Graduate School alongside academics from Ghana, Australia, Romania, India, and Malaysia. This international event focused on developing modern marketing curriculums, AI’s role in education, and preparing students for a rapidly evolving industry.
In a virtual presentation, Dr Van Wyk and Ms Botha highlighted the IMM Graduate School’s unique agility in updating course content faster than many public institutions due to a streamlined decision-making process, while still undergoing formal approvals.
Additionally, IMM Graduate School’s annual study guide updates keep course material current with industry trends.
Key discussions at the event included the need for flexible curricula to address marketing’s changing landscape, technological advancements like AI, AR, and VR, and the importance of work-integrated learning (WIL).
Presentations from industry leaders further emphasised skills required in modern marketing, personalised learning materials, and preparing industry-ready graduates for a digital world. The seminar concluded with a call for ongoing curriculum reviews to keep marketing education relevant and student-centred.

MoodleMoot Africa Conference / 25-27 September 2024
The MoodleMoot Africa Conference brought together educators, technologists, and researchers to explore advancements in online learning, focusing on the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS). Under the theme Moodle Education Technology Platform: Uniting African Universities to Reclaim Africa’s Intellectual Futures and Create Sustainable African Solutions, the event emphasised improving e-learning quality and adaptability across the continent.
Attendees, including Moodle vendors, educational technologists, and students, shared best practices, discussed Moodle integrations, and collaborated on innovative digital education approaches.
The IMM Graduate School’s Centre for Research contributed two insightful papers. Ms Riana Prins, alongside co-authors Dr Helena van Wyk and Mr Jonathan Aspeling, presented on the use of ChatGPT as a feedback tool to boost student engagement and on variable templates in numeracy assessments to maintain assessment integrity. These presentations highlighted the role of AI-driven technologies in enhancing student success and academic integrity.
The conference underscored the importance of adopting 4IR technologies like AI and cloud platforms to build inclusive and equitable educational systems across Africa. Participants left inspired to harness Moodle’s potential to transform Africa’s educational landscape, driving sustainable and scalable e-learning solutions.

African Marketing Confederation (AMC) Annual Conference / 25-27 September 2024
The 2024 African Marketing Confederation (AMC)’ Annual Conference, held at the Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort in Mombasa, Kenya, brought together top marketing professionals, academics, and industry leaders to discuss brand resilience in times of economic uncertainty. The event focused on the importance of brand strength, adaptability, and innovation to stay competitive.
Two key themes emerged from the discussions: First, the need for marketers to stay informed about rapidly evolving marketing and industry trends to drive innovation.
Second, the lack of marketing representation at the corporate C-suite level was highlighted, with presenters and delegates agreeing that marketers must improve their financial acumen to engage in executive conversations to ensure the marketing function is valued for its role in driving business growth.
Ms Claudine Botha, Head Lecturer and Programme Coordinator for the BPhil Honours in Marketing Management, participated in the panel “Building Marketing Competencies through Education and Training”. She emphasised the importance of critical thinking and strategic decision-making in marketing education. Making informed, strategic decisions is complex, she said, stressing the value of education in preparing students for real-world challenges.
Dr Elaine van Wyk, Group Chief Marketing and Sales Officer at IMM Graduate School, joined the panel “Digital Gold Rush: How Africa is Redefining the Future of Digital”. She discussed the significance of digital technology, particularly mobile platforms, for MSMEs in Africa and highlighted the need for agility in marketing. “Marketers need to be agile and able to adapt daily,” she noted, emphasising the importance of technology and strategic skills.
The event also included presentations from globally recognised academic and industry leaders, including Prof Hermawan Kartajaya, co-author with Prof Philip Kotler on several marketing books; Prof Philip Kotler himself, who presented virtually from the USA; Ms Lucy Aitken, Head of Content at Lions Intelligence; Messrs Saiesh Ajudhiya and Daniel Oseman from Kantar; and Prof Jimmy Wong, Associate Professor at the Singapore University of Social Sciences.
The forum fostered collaboration and networking, setting the stage for future growth in Africa’s marketing sector, with AMC Annual Conference 2025 set to take place in Ghana.

NADEOSA Conference / 2-4 October 2024
The 2024 NADEOSA National Conference at MANCOSA’s Johannesburg Campus, brought together educational leaders to discuss Access and Success in Higher Education through technology and Open Educational Resources (OER). The conference aimed to explore how AI, technology, and OER can foster equitable learning and prepare students for the evolving job market.
The IMM Graduate School’s Dr Helena van Wyk and Dr Cecelia Rosa contributed to this event, with dr van Wyk presenting strategies to enhancing engagement between virtual and in-person students. This research, presented under the sub-theme Challenges and Opportunities for Creating Inclusive and Equitable Learning Environments, contributed valuable insights on inclusivity and engagement in blended learning settings.
Several keynote speakers from around the world shared strategies for leveraging AI in peer-to-peer learning and improving leadership to enhance access and equity in higher education.
The event provided a platform to explore how education can become more inclusive and adaptable to technological advancements, with the IMM Graduate School’s Centre for Research contributing to the conversation on future education.

South African Private Higher Education (SAPHE) 2024 Conference / 5 – 6 November
The IMM Graduate School proudly hosted and actively participated in this year’s SAPHE conference at its Parktown campus. The event theme, Leading Innovation in Higher Education: The Role of the Private Education Sector, offered a platform for exploring new ideas in higher education.
Faculty members from the IMM Graduate School made notable contributions: Drs Cecelia Rosa and Helena van Wyk presented research on the evolving role of educators in hybrid classrooms.
Using a grounded theory approach, their study examined methods for promoting inclusivity among both in-person and online students in hybrid learning settings. Drawing on data from the IMM Graduate School’s Parktown campus, the research engaged eight lecturers and eighty students, providing valuable insights into building inclusive and effective learning environments.
Key findings include enhancing student engagement by employing diverse strategies, such as real-time collaborative tools, interactive boards and breakout sessions, to foster balanced participation among all students. They also emphasised optimising technology to support learning by leveraging interactive tools and tailored, engaging content to promote deeper understanding and critical thinking.
Furthermore, they highlighted the importance of continuous training for educators in hybrid teaching methods, with structured engagement techniques that ensure impactful and inclusive learning experiences.
A highlight of the Conference was the inaugural SAPHE Excellence Awards. The awards were to celebrate insightful research in three categories: Teaching and Learning, Research, and Community Engagement. Ms Riana Prins (Head: Assessments and Learner Management System) and Mr Valentine Muradzwika (Head Lecturer and Numeracy and Financial Module Coordinator) were recognised as runners-up in the SAPHE Excellence Awards’ Teaching and Learning category. Their innovative work on Developing a specific question format method for online assessments in numeracy models has done much to advance the field in addressing specific challenges in online assessment methods.
