Master’s Student Voices: Graduates Reflect on Postgraduate Studies

Insights from the IMM Graduate School March Graduation
During the IMM Graduate School’s March Graduation, the Dispatch spoke to the Master’s in Philosophy in Marketing graduates to find out how they experienced their IMM Graduate School’s postgraduate studies journey.
Among them were AC Botha, whose research explored the influence of social media marketing on consumer behaviour in Higher Education; Bronwyn Strydom, who investigated the comparative impact of human-generated versus AI-generated content on consumer engagement in the tourism industry; and Sasha Matope, whose research examined who should be a social media influencer and what it takes for such personalities to impact brands and drive desired outcomes.
Their stories offer a vivid picture of what it means to pursue postgraduate study at the IMM Graduate School.
Why Students Choose the IMM Graduate School for a Master’s
The Dispatch wanted to understand what draws students to the IMM Graduate School for their Master’s studies. All three graduates said the decision came from personal recommendations, the institution’s reputation, and a belief that the IMM Graduate School offers an unmatched balance of academic rigour and real-world marketing relevance.
- AC Botha was initially drawn by the IMM Graduate School’s specific focus on Marketing, but it was the institution’s responsiveness that sealed his decision. “I reached out and received immediate, comprehensive feedback,” he recalls, “which impressed me, as other institutions did not provide the same.” Working in the Private Higher Education Industry, a Master’s was both a professional requirement and the natural next step in his career.
- For Bronwyn Strydom, the decision felt like a continuation of a long-standing relationship; she had completed her Diploma in Marketing Management, her BBA in Marketing Management and her BPhil Honours in Marketing Management through the IMM Graduate School. She found that the blend of academic structure and industry relevance aligned perfectly with her dual role as practitioner and lecturer.
- Sasha Matope made his decision naturally, having already completed both a BBA in Marketing Management and a BPhil Honours in Marketing Management through the institution. He chose the IMM Graduate School because of the credibility of its study process, noting that its qualifications are “well respected everywhere” and give holders a meaningful edge in the industry through relevant and practical knowledge.
Defining Moments of Transformation
The Dispatch asked all three graduates whether there was a defining moment when they knew the qualification would make a real difference. All described a shift not just in career terms, but in how they think.
- For AC, the realisation was ongoing: “I was challenged throughout the process, which reinforced the notion that it would change me entirely; the way I think, the way I question things, and the way I reach an answer.”
- Bronwyn pinpoints her moment more precisely; it came during the early stages of her research, when she began analysing real engagement data from tourism Facebook pages. “I realised I was no longer just consuming knowledge,” she reflects, “but creating insights that could inform marketing practice.” That shift from learner to contributor, she says, changed everything.
- For Sasha, the transformation was equally profound: once you travel on the MPhil in Marketing journey, you are never the same again; it is evident in your interactions that you’ve been through a refining process that makes you a more formidable academic and confident researcher.
Research Challenges and Breakthroughs
All three graduates were candid about the demands of the research process.
- AC’s topic, rooted in a long-standing fascination with consumer behaviour, examined the influence of social media marketing by Higher Education Institutions, drawing on the Theory of Planned Behaviour and Customer-based Brand Equity.
- Bronwyn drew inspiration for her research from the rapid integration of AI into marketing, comparing human-generated and AI-generated content and examining how each affects consumer engagement in tourism. She was most surprised by the complexity of engagement itself: even with AI, context, creativity, and emotional resonance still play a decisive role.
- Sasha’s research topic was born from extensive reading on the rise of social media influencer marketing, sparking curiosity about who should truly be an influencer and what it takes to impact brands meaningfully.
Sasha found the research process more exciting than expected; an opportunity to investigate a real-life issue and arrive at well-researched conclusions, even as adjustments along the way added an element of the unexpected.
Balancing Research with Work and Life
When it came to challenges, all three pointed to the difficulty of balancing research with professional and personal life.
- AC responded with structure, creating a detailed schedule with section-specific deadlines and breaking the literature review into focused, manageable parts.
- Bronwyn leaned on consistency and purpose: “I reminded myself of the bigger reason behind the work,” she says, “and the support of my supervisor and personal network made a significant difference.”
- Sasha’s greatest hurdle was translating clear ideas into coherent academic writing, a challenge that consumed the better part of a year on the first chapter alone. The turning point came through openness: by sharing the struggle with a supervisor, who broke the writing process down into simple, elementary components, Sasha’s work improved tremendously and the path forward became clear.
Supervisor Support and the IMM Graduate School Experience
The Dispatch wanted to understand what distinguishes the IMM Graduate School experience. For all three graduates, supervisor support was central.
AC valued that the IMM Graduate School matched him with a supervisor whose expertise closely aligned with his research passion, while Bronwyn credits her supervisor for pushing her to think more deeply and helping her find and trust her own academic voice. Sasha’s supervisor provided the immense support needed to reach the finish line.
As Sasha put it, embarking on this journey is like diving into the deep end, and a good, empathetic supervisor makes all the difference. All three graduates described their supervisors as knowledgeable, accessible, and genuinely invested in student success, with the IMM Graduate School consistently offering two standout qualities: credibility and relevance.
“The IMM Graduate School provided the academic structure and supervisor support needed for an independent research journey, while still maintaining strong industry relevance.” — Bronwyn Strydom
Career Impact and Personal Growth
Completing a Master’s has opened doors none of the graduates fully anticipated.
- For AC, the qualification has reinforced his standing in academia, unlocked more senior career pathways, and provided deep personal fulfilment. “It allows me to be a role model for my children,” he says, “showing them that if you are dedicated and work hard, anything is possible.”
- For Bronwyn, the degree has elevated her credibility as a voice in AI and digital marketing, strengthened her ability to make evidence-based decisions, and opened opportunities to contribute to industry conversations about marketing transformation.
- For Sasha, the journey has instilled a deep confidence when confronting marketing and business challenges, along with a strong passion for data-driven solutions. “I’m all about data now,” Sasha reflects, “and I think it’s hard to provide progressive and sustainable solutions without it.”
Advice for Prospective Postgraduate Students
Their advice to those considering postgraduate study but uncertain whether they can manage it alongside work and life is consistent: it is difficult, but possible, and it is worth it.
AC emphasises the importance of a schedule, consistent effort, and family support, while Bronwyn encourages prospective students not to wait until everything feels certain. “Progress happens one step at a time,” she notes. “If you are curious and committed, the growth you experience makes the journey worthwhile.”
Sasha echoes this, describing the MPhil in Marketing as a “bottom in seat” programme that demands committed hours and months of gruelling research but promises profound fulfilment. The key, Sasha says, is to keep your focus firmly on that prize.
Their parting advice to their pre-Master’s selves says it all:
“Be patient, be consistent, don’t wait — just start.” — AC Botha
“Trust the process and be kinder to yourself. That uncertainty is where growth and discovery happen.” — Bronwyn Strydom
“Let’s brace up and tackle this journey head on. It’s going to be hard, gruesome and stressful but it’s a worthwhile, life-changing journey.” — Sasha Matope
Reflections on the Master’s Journey
Asked to sum up in a single sentence what completing their Master’s meant to them, AC described himself as “accomplished, inspired, and hopeful.”
Bronwyn offered a reflection that speaks for the journey all three have taken: “Completing my Master’s at the IMM Graduate School was a journey of growth that transformed me from a consumer of knowledge into a confident contributor to the marketing discipline.”
Sasha, surveying the work done and the outcome achieved, summed it up simply: “I can’t help but be proud of what I have accomplished.”
