Research Requires Time and Dedication
Professor Bick’s transition from the private sector to academia highlights the dedication necessary for success in research. For him, research is not just about data collection but a deep commitment to the process. “A good researcher is somebody who has a lot of dedication and commitment to the process. It needs to be rigorous, it requires a lot of effort to produce publishable articles, and it’s something that you need to be ethical about and it’s something that you’re going to make some sort of contribution.”
With over 70 publications, his dedication is evident. He notes that entering academia later in life led him to develop a passion for research, driven by the pressure to “publish or perish.”
Ethics Are Vital
Professor Bick emphasises that maintaining strong ethical standards is vital for credible research. With increasing pressure to publish quickly, ethics go beyond compliance, ensuring transparency and trust. “This is not an easy process to do research and you’ve got to be rigorous, you’ve got to be dedicated to spending time to do it, and you’ve got to adhere to ethical standards.”
The IMM Graduate School’s Centre for Research champions these principles, believing that research built on ethical foundations advances the field and remains trustworthy.
Research Must Solve a Real Problem
Professor Bick advocates for research that addresses real-world problems, a philosophy shaped by his business and academic experiences. “Coming from a private sector business background and coming from the business school background, that’s the whole aim of the research, that it does make a difference, that it can be used in the real world.”
The IMM Graduate School’s Centre for Research embraces this approach, focusing on research that bridges the gap between academia and industry.
Professor Bick’s work in marketing metrics, including the development of tools to assess return on marketing investment, exemplifies this practical focus. “What excites me about research was really sparked by my doctorate… I developed a model that could then assess the potential return on marketing investment, which was a very practical tool.”
A Call to Researchers
At the IMM Graduate School, Professor Bick is actively mentoring faculty members and students, strengthening the IMM Graduate School’s academic foundation. His supervision has led to the conversion of students’ dissertations into journal articles and conference papers, giving students practical, real-world exposure.
“The students get so excited when they get through their dissertation process… getting a publication out of that really does help get the real-world application out of the research.”
Professor Bick’s mentorship reflects the values of the IMM Graduate School’s Centre for Research which encourages dedication, ethics, and practical solutions.
“Another exciting part of research is that internal satisfaction, that internal reward that you get from actually being successful, having an article or paper accepted… there’s a lot of satisfaction in addition to recognition of doing good research.”
His guidance will continue to inspire the next generation of researchers, shaping the future with research that drives meaningful change.
