Candlelight Hustle: Side Hustles That Were Born During Load Shedding and Thrived
It all starts with a notification from “EskomSePush” and people rushing to prepare for the worst. For many South Africans, load shedding has darkened homes and has negatively affected the daily lives of people. This problem sparked a flame in bold entrepreneurs that ignited something new, a side hustle. These new opportunities didn’t just survive darkness; they were the light that kept burning through it.

Take Makatu Tshi-vhula, a young entrepreneur from Soweto. After learning the ropes at a candle factory, Makatu started The Light Candles in February 2020. From household candles to luxurious scented ones, his range of products became popular with churches, event organisers and traditional healers, seeking reliable lighting amidst the power outages. As load shedding worsened, demand for his handcrafted candles grew. Today, his small business delivers across all provinces and stands as a shining example of turning adversity into enterprise.

On a much larger scale, the Herholdt’s Group, a once traditional electrical supplier, shifted gears in response to increasing blackouts. In 2016, the company began offering solar power equipment alongside its regular stock. As demand for solar surged in response to persistent load shedding, so did the company’s growth. By 2023, Herholdt’s had transformed into one of South Africa’s leading solar suppliers, with revenue climbing from R604 million in 2018 to over R8.12 billion in 2023. Their ability to pivot turned a looming energy crisis into a multibillion-rand success story.
These are not isolated stories. Across South Africa, side hustles in everything from handmade crafts to mobile tutoring services have taken root in the dark.

So, what can we learn from these “Candlelight Hustlers”?
1. Constraints fuel creativity. With limited power and resources, you’re forced to think differently. Consider what skills or tools you already have that could meet a need – especially one that arises because of load shedding.
2. Start small and local. Many of these success stories began in kitchens, lounges, or community halls. Your first customers are often your neighbours, colleagues, or WhatsApp groups.
3. Embrace low-tech solutions. You don’t need the latest tech to get going.
4. Use the time. Instead of waiting for the lights to come back on, invest those hours in brainstorming, planning, making, or learning. Every outage is a window to work on your future.
